Filmmaker Fan Popo in Conversation

Hosted by the Institute for Screen Industries Research (ISIR), leading Chinese queer filmmaker Fan Popo will visit the University of Nottingham in February. During his visit, Fan will hold film screenings and Q&As, give talks and workshops to students, and attend research workshops. This event is part of the University of Nottingham’s LGBT History Month.

About the Filmmaker:

Fan Popo is a queer filmmaker, writer and activist. Born in 1985, he is a graduate of the Beijing Film Academy and published Happy Together: Complete Record of a Hundred Queer Films (Beifang Wenyi Press, 2007). He is a committee member of Beijing Queer Film Festival, which has been active since 2007. He has also organized the China Queer Film Festival Tour, taking not only his own but many other Chinese queer films to more than 20 cities across China. In 2015, he brought a lawsuit against the Chinese government for banning his film Mama Rainbow. His documentary works include: New Beijing New Marriage (Vancouver International Film Festival, Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival), Be a Woman (CinemAsia Amsterdam) Chinese Closet (Berlin Asian Hotshots Film Festival), Mama Rainbow (Frameline, OUTFEST), The VaChina Monologues (China On Screen, Seoul International Women's Film Festival), and Papa Rainbow (ReelChina NYU, DC Chinese Film Festival). In 2015 he did video interviews as part of his work on a theatre project called All about My Parents and Their Child. His video art installation Occupy Shanghai Metro was showcased as part of the WOMEN art exhibition at the Chinese Culture Centre San Francisco.
